REFORESTING AGRICULTURAL AND DEGRADED LAND WITH FRUIT, MEDICINAL AND VALUE TREES
In the long-term, we would like to help farmers and land-owners rehabilitate their land.
A lot of the deforested and degraded land following the Agrarian Reform and Colonization Law (1964~1994) are for sale. Three to four generations have passed since the first settlers cleared the land for cattle ranching or growing crops (sugar cane, corn, manioc, plantain), and the new generation isn’t interested in keeping up with the family tradition. Most agricultural practice in the area involved intensive use of fertilizers and pesticides, contaminating ground water and rivers. We are very interested in rehabilitating these plots of land, using the agroforestry model that would include using local bees for pollination.
Although creating a network of living pharmacies and saving standing virgin forests are our top priorities at the moment, assisting farmers and land-owners in planting fruit trees, value wood, and medicinal plants and trees is a compelling addition to our strategy of formulating and producing natural remedies and personal care products, especially the production of essential oils that require significant amount of plant material to extract a fraction of oil (300 to 600 to 1).
